Adam Ardisasmita, CEO of Arsa Kids, argues that game-based learning isn’t just a fun alternative—it’s a necessary evolution to meet the cognitive and emotional needs of today’s young learners. His journey from a student pitching ideas at Startup Lokal to building a children’s edutainment platform reveals how startups can disrupt education by focusing on real user pain points, not just technology.

Why Game-Based Learning Works for Modern Children

The core of Arsa Kids’ approach is built on three insights about how today’s children learn. First, children are digital natives—born into a world where screens are normal. Research shows 72% of 8-year-olds in the US already use smartphones, and even toddlers can independently navigate YouTube. This isn’t just habit; it’s a fundamental shift in how they process information.

"They’re more skilled than their grandparents at using technology," Adam says. "But that doesn’t mean they’re learning effectively. The problem isn’t screen time—it’s unguided screen time."

Second, neuroscience shows that passive learning fails to engage the brain. A Harvard study using brainwave monitoring found that students’ brains were flat during lectures—more active during sleep than during class. This confirms that traditional 'Education 1.0,' where teachers lecture and students passively absorb, is outdated.

Third, modern learning must be active, collaborative, and personalized—what Adam calls 'Education 3.0.' This model treats every child as both a learner and a teacher, with knowledge coming from diverse sources and learning happening anytime, anywhere.

Speech delay and a shocking lack of pain sensitivity—because the brain hadn’t been stimulated by real-world experiences.

"I thought I only needed to build a good app for kids," Adam recalls. "But I realized: if parents don’t understand screen time’s impact, no app will help."

This led Arsa Kids to redesign their product with parents in mind. They introduced:

  • Time management features: A character warns children 15 minutes before playtime ends, then pauses the game when time is up. The character says, "Pipo is sleepy now," making it socially acceptable to stop playing.
  • Progress reports: Parents can see what their child has learned and how much time they’ve spent on each activity.
  • Age-based recommendations: The app suggests optimal daily screen time based on the child’s age.

"We’re not just building a game," Adam says. "We’re building a bridge between parents and their children’s digital world."

Solving the 'Screen Time Addiction' Problem

The most common pain point parents shared during user testing? "My child gets upset when I take the gadget away. They cry, scream, even throw things."

Instead of fighting this behavior, Arsa Kids designed their game to reduce resistance. By making the game itself the teacher of self-regulation, they turn a conflict into a learning moment. When the game pauses and says, "It’s time to rest," the child learns that stopping play is normal—and even rewarded.

"The goal isn’t to eliminate screen time," Adam explains. "It’s to make it meaningful, structured, and healthy."

This approach works because it meets parents where they are. Rather than asking them to change their behavior overnight, it gives them a tool that makes the transition easier. "We’re not telling parents to be perfect. We’re giving them a partner in parenting."

Designing for the Child’s Perspective

A key lesson from Arsa Kids’ development process: never assume you know what children like. The team tested every design element with real children. They learned that what adults find visually appealing—complex color schemes, detailed graphics—often repels kids.

"One child said, 'Kak, this yellow is ugly. Change it to blue.' We did. And the game became more popular."

This user-centered design philosophy extends beyond visuals. The team studied how children interact with games—how they draw, how they solve puzzles, how they respond to challenges. This data informs not just gameplay, but the app’s educational content.

The Hidden Challenge: Defining Intelligence Differently

Indonesia’s education system still equates intelligence with high scores in math and science. But Adam argues that this narrow definition fails children with different strengths.

"If a child is bad at math but great at music, they’re told, 'You’ll never be anything.' That’s wrong."

To combat this, Arsa Kids is developing a new feature based on Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences theory. The app will:

  • Introduce role models for different types of intelligence (e.g., a musician, an artist, a problem-solver).
  • Use behavioral analysis (e.g., drawing patterns) to identify a child’s strengths.
  • Recommend activities that nurture those strengths.

"We want every child to feel smart," Adam says. "Not because they got 100 on a test, but because they’re good at something that matters to them."

Monetization That Puts Kids First

Many edutainment apps rely on ads—but Adam warns this is unethical and ineffective. Google Play bans ads in apps for children under 13, and even if allowed, they’re harmful.

Instead, Arsa Kids uses two proven models:

  • Freemium: Free access to basic content, with paid upgrades for full features.
  • Subscription: Monthly access to new content and learning paths.

"We don’t want to sell to kids. We want to sell to parents who believe in their child’s potential."

Why Indonesia’s Edutainment Market Is Still Underdeveloped

Despite a 62 million student population, Indonesia has only a handful of active edutainment startups. In contrast, Berlin’s Mobile Kids Gamer conference featured over 80 companies focused on educational games.

"We’re not behind because we lack ideas," Adam says. "We’re behind because we haven’t yet convinced parents to invest in digital learning."

The solution? Start with one clear problem. "Don’t try to fix the entire education system. Fix one pain point—like screen time addiction—and build from there."
